Stained Glass Nuno Felting

I had a chance to stop by my favorite live edge slab store, Kettle Moraine Hardwoods, and found a beautiful long slice of walnut as well as some circles of box elder that have really interesting reddish-hot pink rings (what I will do with these will be reserved for a future post).

As always, I started by sanding and putting multiple coats of polyurethane on the wood slab to bring out the movement of the wood and then sat and stared at it for a while trying to decide where inspiration would take me.

This piece had an interesting ring formation that reminded me of mandala drawings so I decided to do my own interpretation of a stained glass nuno felting technique with black outlines for the darker rings and lighter browns and golds for the lighter rings.

I completely forgot to take a picture of all of the outlining work that I did prior to putting on the wool background so I peeled off a layer to give you just get a peek at the middle, most intricate, part of the design.

For the bark, I wanted to have a bit of texture, so I added in pieces of black tulle tp get almost a ruffled looked. Once it was felted, I added in some embroidery for even more depth.

Just need to mount it and frame it and will post final pictures.
